How to Get Rid of a Computer Virus
How do you get rid of a computer virus? First you have to consider what a virus is actually doing once it is on your computer. Once you figure that part out the removal for the most part is fairly easy. Although that is not always the case. Most viruses are on their to really just annoy you, while they do what they want in the background. This could be anything from using your pc as a spambot host to infecting other computers with the same or worse virus. Some viruses come in phases. Kind of like an army. They release parts of the program one at a time, eventually rendering your system useless. Sometimes so much so that the only alternative is to format the hard drive and start from scratch. There are a few places viruses typically attack. They normally start out as simply spyware and evolve into viruses. Basically a spyware can be contracted from P2P programs like KaZaa or Limewire. Sometimes it can come from browsing to the wrong sites or clicking on the wrong attachment in an email. Once the spyware is on the computer it can start pulling data from your computer and send it to servers all over the internet for use to send you popups whenever you browse the internet. Most times this is where the virus is contracted. You start getting all of these popups and wonder what has happened to your fast computer. So out of reaction you click on the popup that promises to fix your problem. This in turn downloads a program known as malware. It claims to get rid of all the viruses it detects on your system, but only if you buy the full version of the program. This is just an attempt to swindle you out of money while the problem only gets worse. That is the new rave with viruses these days, to act like a solution, so it can cause a problem. Common names for these types of infections are spy sherrif and similar names like that. Now for the removal. In order to remove a threat like this you are going to have to call in the swat team. This sounds worse than it really is. Basically you will have to turn off the system restore option on your computer. Once you do that you are going to have to run adaware or spybot or someother anti-spyware program. This will remove a lot of the problems. Then you are going to have to run a full scan with your anti-virus program. This will remove even more of the threats. Then you will have to google to find out what files are connected to these threats. You will need to delete as many of those as possible. Once that is complete, you will need to re-boot your computer into safe mode. Once in safe mode you will need to run another anti-spyware and anti-virus scan. This will probably remove a few more things, but not as many as were removed in the first scan. At this point you are probably going to have to delete some registry keys. There is a wonderful program out there that will make this easy for you. It is called Hijack This. You will need to run this and save the log file. Compare this information with what you find on Google about the virus you have contracted. Delete the proper keys. Do not delete anything unless it says to. If you delete the wrong keys it could prevent your system from booting. This is really something that is better to be handled by a professional, but if you have a good backup of all your files, then this shouldn't be an issue. Once you are finished with Hijack This, then you can re-boot your computer. This should have removed all threats. If the threat re-surges then you missed something. You will have to repeat what you just did. Most times though this is because you didn't delete a file that needed to be deleted or a registry key still needs to be deleted. Some really good resources for troubleshooting viruses is Google Groups and Yahoo Groups, in addition to a number of tech forums. A lot of this help you can get for free. Please be patient with the people you are working with. If they ask you a question, it is for a very good reason. You may have to submit a number of Hijack This logs before you can finally get all the help you need to fix your problem. However, this is all free so you shouldn't complain. If you feel it isn't getting resolved quick enough... please... feel free to pay someone $60+ per hour to fix your problem. |
